Tips and Style:

From this page I hope to help you improve your enjoyment of rock 'n' roll dancing with these tips and styling techniques. They are not the 'be-all' and 'end-all' of Rock 'n' Roll , but I hope they help you get more enjoyment while dancing.
Basic, but very important:
When you first start to Rock 'n' Roll dance, the learning curve feels steep. These five tips will help the novice straighten out the curve.
  • Keep your dance steps small. This will make your dancing tidier.
  • Keep muscle tone in your arms, this will assist with relaying/reading the lead.
  • Keep your elbows bent (while in a closed position) this will reduce the distance between you and your partner.
  • When turning it is very important to relax your hand grip (do NOT have your fingers gripping each other ). It is better that you loose contact with your partner than hurt their shoulder or arm.
  • Rock 'n' Roll is fun, being with your partner of choice is great. So when practicing or out social dancing remember to relax, put a smile on your face, enjoy yourselves and have FUN. Fun for you and your partner. PT.
Safety Tips:
These tips are a must to know, remember and do.
  • If you are the person turning, be you the leader or the follower (and your partner is still holding onto your hand) make absolutely sure that you (the one turning) have your elbow (of the arm that is held by your partner) in front of your face so that you can see it. You do not have to stare at it, but make sure that you are conscious of it. This will then make sure that your shoulder will not be in a vulnerable position to be hurt or damaged.
  • Leaders and followers DO NOT pull your partners arm/hand down while it is above their head and they have their back to you. Lower your hand/arm when your partner is facing you, NEVER when they have their back to you.
  • Make sure that you are conscious of the position of others on the dance floor. Leaders as you are the one initiating the moves/turns LOOK before you send your partner in a particular direction. Followers also be aware of others on the floor.
  • Be prepared for others to have very little 'dance floor' etiquette. Some dancers NEVER look where they are going (some move backward with out a look or thought) so always be prepared to send your partner in a safer direction or stop all together.
  • Use 'common sense' if it hurts DO NOT DO IT.
Tips For Leads: Tips For Followers:
Do not pull/push your partner through the moves. Lead the follower into the move and let them execute it in their own way.
D
on't lead the follower into moves that they don't know.
Look at your partner and smile. You are having fun, so show it.
Do not anticipate what the leader is going to do. Follow their lead.
Working as a team is also the responsibility of the follower. If the 'team' looks good you will too.
Look at your partner and smile. You are having fun, so show it.
